Is There Anything Good in Rap-Rock

fred-durst.jpgAerosmith did that song with Run-DMC, Anthrax did a few, 311 made it a little different and more groove based (check out a video interview with them here)- and then Limp Bizkit dropped the standard with horrible songs starting a trend of a lot of mediocre rap-rock bands hitting the mainstream.

What ever happened to Limp Bizkit anyway? I researched this a little, and it turns out they are still around. They has that weird guy guitarist quit on them, taking away a lot of their energy (and probably anything remarkable at all about them). They eventually recovered and hired a new guitarist. There is where all the info gets fuzzy, because apparently their guitarist came back in 2003 only to quit again this year. Thats when I realized again that I dont care, and would be glad to not hear from this band ever again.

Korn was called rap-rock, but I just dont see it. They had influences from rap obviously - but the vocals make them simply a nu-metal band. I would say the same for slipknot. But maybe you could really credit that mid/late 90s influx to them?

Rage Against the Machine debuted their first album in 1992, but they didnt have major success till their second album released in 1996, right around the time of this trend. They were certainly talented musicians, and mixed a lot of different?genres.?Linkin Park, Kid Rock, and POD are still around after coming into the limelight around the same time. But I think you would agree that they have all moved away from their original sound.

Bloodhound Gang! There is a group I can enjoy - they didnt even come close to taking themselves seriously, and the music was decent. Maybe in a similar vein is Mindless Self Indulgence - but really, I doubt you could count them as RapRock.

But with all these groups I have mentioned, have any of them topped or equaled the quality of this fusion as Anthrax (or aerosmith) did? Why not? Maybe they are just DIFFERENT, and not better or worse? Maybe since it was a huge market in the 90s as compared to the 80s, too many labels were influencing the types of songs released, making them a lot more mainstream than the older stuff?

They’re all valid questions and I have no idea the real answer. This may not be the huge trend now, but these bands are still around - and still making music. Where are the bands that are doing this right?

I havent found them. I bet they are out there - if you know any - do share! I dont HATE the genre, its just filled with a bit too much crap sometimes.

  6. Fiorello Films  Says:

I think the closest you’ll find to quality in rap-rock type bands is in the old school Brooklyn hardcore bands (i.e. Biohazard) and those bands who operate in that style but may not necessarily come from Brooklyn (i.e. Furious Styles from Seattle).

I agree with your assessment in that I am also confused with why Korn is lumped in with the rap rock groups. Sure they have the whole self proclaimed “we made metal groove” thing going in their music, but the only times they actually delve into actual rap-rock seems to be when they have a guest on board to do the rapping in a song (i.e. Nas, Ice Cube, Fred Durst).

One thing that kind of urks me is it seems that whenever there is a rap-rock debate, never is arguably the greatest rap-rock song brought up: “Epic” by Faith no more. And if you ask me Faith No More were the true originators of making metal groove long before Korn even existed.

  7. Jerimi  Says:

I can not believe I forgot about Faith No More. You are right, not only were they doing that?long before a lot of bands - but they did it WELL.

i would agree with fiorello about faith no more. i’ve been saying that they don’t get half the credit they deserve for years now. i would like to suggest a band called candiria. they not only blend hip hop and heavy metal, but also fusion jazz and punk.

  13. double what  Says:

    Skindred

The band’s first album, Babylon, came out in 2005. They are a mix of reggae, rap, metal, and punk.
I think they are from Britain.

This is probably the best quality of rap-metal in this century that you are going to find.

  14. Silence  Says:

System of a down is supposed to release an album with Wu-yang clan

  15. Turk  Says:

Senser or The Testicles - neither fall into both categorys constantly and Senser have a bit extra on the electronic side of things, The Testicles a hardcore thrash blast, both have a deck or 2…. I’d hardly call them Rap or Rock but bollox check ‘em.

oh Public Enemy’s track on New World Odour ‘The who the when the why the what’ is the chorus - thats good.

I think 311 did a good job mixing rock and rap. They also mixed other styles with it too. There new stuff is kind of going away from rock rap but the influence is still there. I can’t think of any other rap rock band that is better then them

I was told there are some Nine Inch Nails remixes floating around out there, I’ve yet to find them.
