Lacuna Coil - Live vs Their Recordings

Have you ever seen a band for the first time, been completely blown away, and then bought their cd?

YES

Alright then. Isn’t it just annoying when the CD is nothing like what they sounded like live?

YES

I have to say though, more often than not the opposite happens. That is: I already have bought a CD and love it. Eventually I end up at a show the band is playing - I’m stoked since Ive never seen the band live… then.. they.. well …suck. That’s no fun!! The worst offenders I know about are Orgy (remember them?). I never had the chance to see them live, but I caught some video of it. Great band - that can’t for the life of them pull their shit together for a show! (my opinion obviously duh)

This is what’s interesting about Lacuna Coil. A while back I heard songs off of a couple of their CDs. While they were fine and all, there wasnt anything exciting happening there. Nothing about it stood out good or bad, ya know?

Eventually, I end up at Ozzfest. While I’m sitting around passing time till ‘Im interviewing again I make a point to catch their set. I leave totally blown away! For one, they are way heavier live. Second, there is a surprising level of energy! They have charisma, both as a band and individuals! It’s like watching a totally different band than I heard on their recordings wtf!

The same thing happened last night (prompting me to talk/rant about it here). There we are, out in Worcester MA filming Lacuna Coil and others when I find myself completely blown away AGAIN. It was even more intense in a smaller setting!

I have a couple of theories on this:

Theory 1: They are genius marketers and like to gamble

In this scenario, Lacuna Coil and their record label came together and agreed to water down their recording. This would achieve two things: More radio airplay, and an audience who would be blown away at their live intensity. Word of mouth would spread about their live show, increasing the amount of people showing up while the increased radio airplay from the watered down tracks would do the same. Everyone wins!

Theory 2: They just didn’t have the right producer (or whatever)

Someone screwed up and didn’t see them live , or get the band before recording them - and just had trouble bringing the energy out of them for the recording. Having talked to them, I know they get a lot from the audience, so it’s probably gonna take a pushy producer to get them to recreate that in such a sterile setting…

hmm I dunno. I will continue to bitch about it though — they are sooo good live!! I just get bored with the CDs. I will always be a fan simply due to the energy and performance they put out live.

I saw them 2 times live some years ago and they were great. They interact well with the public and give the right energy. The only thing that I don’t like is the male voice, cristina is much more better and I think she could sing alone.

the reverse of being blown away! DISTURBED, there recordings are super kickass!
i was so anxious to see them live on MAYHEM FEST, and to my surprise…. they lacked to energy they have on there CDS!
so i was greatly dissappointed, i still listen to them, but will probably not see them live again!
