Anyone who thinks metal is dead ought to go out and grab a copy of Droid’s self-titled debut record, because upon a first listen, you will clearly hear that metal is in fact alive and kicking you squarely in the crotch.
Droid’s overall metal onslaught sounds something akin to the bastard child of Mushroomhead, Meshuggah and Lamb of God, with a little extra brutality sprinkled on top. Droid metal is as smart as it is heavy, with enough breakdowns and hooky parts to keep you listening, and wanting more at the same time.
Fueled By Hate is a catchy little tune that will leave you dancing in the streets after a listen. Ok, perhaps that was a little bit of an exaggeration, but it definitely is one of the catchier tracks of the record, albeit incredibly heavy. It is followed by the immense track God of Anger, which makes strides to be the premiere track of the record. The guitars are so mountainous and chunky that you might not want to listen to it on a high volume, but who am I kidding? This is balls to the wall, man’s man metal; of course you’re going to crank it to eleven.
Vengeance is Mine is the best song on this record by far, and is a track featuring vaunted Deftones frontman Chino Moreno up to his old tricks. And by old tricks I mean the vocal wizardly we all fell in love with when Adrenaline and Around the Fur were released over ten years ago. Moreno, along with Droid frontman James Eason, verbally and lyrically grinds through an ear drum accosting tirade on this track, and it lasts for around four minutes. There is a good chance you will be left without hearing, or pants for that matter, depending. Either way, it’s seriously intense.
Droid really does have a very noticeable Meshuggah hint to their song composure, in their guitar chords and their start and start mentality. Their vocals really sound like you threw those of Mushroomhead and Lamb of God into a cement mixer. Some songs, like Salt the Graves and Together We Die, almost channel some old school Fear Factory, although not as technical. Droid can also somehow make a whole song sound barren, like a four minute breakdown. That is a very cool trait to their music.
Droid’s self titled record is a definitive slab of grinding guitar driven metal. Is there much more I can say than that? Yes, go buy it now.
