Splitting Hairs in Music
“There was a time in the early 80s when a kid wearing an Iron Maiden shirt would get his ass kicked if he stepped foot into a Black Flag concert. Sadly, the hardcore vs. metal war waged for years, long after members of each genre began expressing admiration for one another?s music. It took crossover groups like North Carolina?s Corrosion of Conformity, Houston?s D.R.I. and New York?s Agnostic Front to hammer some sense into audience?s heads and create a bridge for the two styles to coexist. “
This is part of the intro to an absolutely great blog written by Dave Peters of Throwdown. It mainly deals with the dividing up of heavy music into all the subgenres, and the idea that you “cant” like this type of music AND like this other kind etc.
If you’re anything like me - you probably can relate to this quote:
When I went to that Unbroken show, I didn?t even think about whether or not I was supposed to be there with my Maiden shirt or whether or not the dude in the Mouthpiece shirt was supposed to say he liked my shirt when he let me cut in line with him. I knew what I liked and I went where it was. There weren?t rules about what I was supposed or allowed to like, or if there were I wasn?t aware or paying attention to them. I didn?t think about that then and I still don?t today.
I think of people who would give a shit what shirt you are wearing, and such as music SNOBS. Its just as bad as hating a band because too many people know about them, or because they got on a bigger label and are now “corporate”. How retarded is that? If you’re picking what music you listen to, what websites you go to, or anything like that based on if its corporate, underground, or ONLY talks about bands that are thrashcore (or whatever random genre you can think of) then you are really missing out, and doing the same as a lot of others - following the crowd - even if its in the opposite direction.?The crowd is still deciding what you do! Quit it and like the music you like, read what you want, wear what you want and ignore everyone else?!
Anyway, Im getting off topic — he goes into the subgenres and hating between them way more on his blog post here: http://headbangersblog.mtv.com/2007/07/30/guest-blog-dave-peters-of-throwdown-on-splitting-hairs/
