Now, Serj was born in Lebanon but mostly has lived in the US up until recently. He started to head out to New Zealand after recording his solo album to relax and just fell in love with the place:

“After recording the album I withdrew and took off there for three months, which I had to do to gain citizenship…

“I’m such a crazy workaholic that it was hard stepping away from my work in LA, but it was great because it allowed me to reflect. It made me think, ‘Wow man, I have this amazing life.’”

I do hear it’s gorgeous out there! I wonder if anyone there recognizes him or if he can be completely anonymous? That may be part of the allure. I’m not so sure New Zealanders are huge metalheads.

As a kiwi I can assure you many New Zealanders love System of a Down and there are plenty of metalheads, and others, who would recognise Serj. Any band as big as SOAD in the states will be known in NZ, though a flourishing local music industry exists too.
