Starbucks is Less Evil than Universal?
Sonic Youth is releasing a new CD. Alright - Not interested. BUT its on the new Starbucks label. Again : me = not interested.
BUT this brings out a lot of the indie crowd out to moan and groan about ’selling out’.
The band’s answer? “They’re less evil than Univeral”
ORLY?
Personally I think its uber-silly how people hate on corporations and such for being big, and all about money. Thats like hating a monkey for umm… jumping around in trees. Yeah that. Why? Its what they do! But if you are going to hate on corporations for being what they are, then you can’t really say that Starbucks is better than Universal can you? I mean seriously?
Isn’t Starbucks the one that marketed the “experience” of being in a coffee shop instead of high quality coffee, fooled millions of 20something wanna-be hipsters that paying $6 a cup is cool, and then replicated it 20 times into every city on the planet? Aren’t they the ones who ruined the idea of a corner coffee shop?
Hey - I’ll still buy a caramel frappacino there any day. Of course, Im not the one talking about the evils of corporations now am I?

wow, that is just as ironic as when i found a grateful dead album for sale at a starbucks right next to bob dylan and bob marley. sonic youth ARE in their 40’s? but its really sad to see that underground artist= or independent artist sell out on their principles just because of the money factor- and you know its all about the money. starbucks is a corporation, corporations dont give a shit about art or anysort of culture for cultures sake, they will rob and pillage whatever they can to make a buck. greed is the first principle, it is an outright contradiction to bohemian ideals and a irony. Coffeeshops are becoming a vestige of burgeois tenet and are losing their cultural connection to the avante garde and…. well starbucks is evil. its a symbol of blase pig consumerism stealing a trend of seattle hipsterism and making it a national product for stuff shirted yuppies in their uber SUVS. maybe on the positive side now their is a big enough liberal burgeious crowd that starbucks is trying to market to them?
still though fuck sonic youth. ian mckaye never sold out.

the only two good things to come out of seattle are Queensyrche and Nevermore - maybe soundgarden and AiC on a good day…
starbucks can take a long walk off a short pier.
The corps have it all backwards. What they should do is drop the damn price of their products (Coffee in this case) so artists don’t have to sell out to make ends meet.
As to the sellout issue - I’m sure there are plenty of bands out there that would rather sell out then go be a suit and tie guy or gal… its all a biz anymore.by…
Its not just the corps - facism sucks as a whole.

Starbucks is great but I like coffee not the socializing or computer use.. I bought a very expenisive machine from them and make it myself. In the NOT so long run it’s paid for over in a very short time, then I have guests over, sit out some different coffees, favored syrups, spices, and whipped cream.. They love it!!!

Why don’t all the haters of Starbucks just go to hell? I have lived in seattle for my whole life. While you guys sit there and bash it and refuse to enjoy the simple pleasures of life, i am sitting in a Starbucks drinking a GREAT cup of coffee and reading a book. I mean if you all think that the world is not based around MONEY in just about every aspect, then you are a fool. If you want to figure out just about why anything in history happened, follow the money. Obviously those of you who do not understand this concept are either to young to be complaining because you clearly do not understand what’s going on. OR you are just stupid and need to get a second job because you have to much time on your hands, which could be used to better your life and make some freakin MONEY. I’m sorry because if you guys think that something is evil because it is money hungry, then you do not understand what is necessary to survive in the present day united states. Go to freakin Cuba or something and have everything for free ya damn comi’s. Welcome to the way a properly raised american processes thoughts.

Consumer Reports just rated McDonalds as best coffee.
I drink regular brew and have always thought Starbucks to be bitter.
Luckily, here in Portland there are dozens of neighborhood coffee shops with warmer environments than Sbux.
Only difference between coffee and cocaine is the distribution network.

starbucks donated a whopping 1 million dollars to tsunami relief in sumatra, one of the leading countries their beans come from.
and with every lb. of coffee you bought, 1 dollar went to the relief effort.
if thats not tight as fuck i dont know what is.
just work for them, you get free drinks.

The Big corporations make it harder for artists/bands/other creative personalities to get their stuff out there. Sonic Youth (fair enough, im not a huge fan) may have joined the starbucks label, but does that really mean they have sold out, they may have just taken the first opportunity to get out from the underground into the mainstream. they are just making their material available to a larger crowd.
people said the same about metallica when they released the video for “one”, calling them sell outs because you could see them on TV, instead of just at their live performances. saying they were leaving their hardcore fans behind in search of money and fame, errr NO!! they were just making their stuff more accessible to new fans etc.
Starbucks itself as a corporation is EXPLOITING coffee and the said experiences by charging $6. it may well be the best coffee you have ever tasted, but why pay that for a cup of coffee, when you can sit on you porch(or anywhere), with a coffee you have made yourself that cost you a maximum of $3. Its sick that something as basic as a coffee is priced at $6, just because its got a starbucks logo on the cup!
would you pay $6 for a coffee that had a microsoft, or a mcdonalds logo?? NO, then y pay for a starbucks one. its a friggin coffee!!
so yeah starbucks is evil, just like every other corporation out there, but not for signing a band and releasing a record label. but by exploiting one of the few things we as people have enjoyed for decades. And not for $6!!!!
oh and in reply to danny: get off your arse, what on earth are you experiencing with your head buried in a book, drinking coffee?? theres a whole world rushing by and all that. get outside and enjoy it while you still can!

Well, seeing as how i have been to places that most americans cant say they have been to. i think i have done pretty well at seeing a world you say is rushing by me. Secondly, funny how you say their exploiting coffee, if someone would come out with something that starbucks drinkers would actually like and doesn’t taste like cow shit, like Mcdonald’s coffee does. Then maybe you wouldn’t be complaining, and the only reason you are complaining is probably because you yourself cannot afford Starbucks, which then means that you can not tell me what i am missing in the world because obviously you can’t afford to have seen much if any of it. This leads me to say get a better job. Get off my arse? Dude if you saw me, you would know i could break you in half, i don’t just sit on my ass all day and read, i read because reading is very educational. To those that think Mcdonald’s has the best coffee, you must be drinking foldger’s or something and have no idea what good coffee is, which i personally like to call “dirt in a can”. Lastly, if you don’t like the prices don’t pay for it, i’m sure it has no impact on how well starbucks is going to continue to do. If you want to speak about an evil corp move on to Northrop Grumman or something, atleast their equipment is responsible for millions of deaths in several of our wars.

Yeah, i spend $5 occasionally for a venti soy mocha, but not all the time. Here and there. I rather walk a few stores down and get cheaper coffee that tastes good as well. Go with regular cafe’ at SB’s but make sure to get blend you like.

once upon a time a group of marines wrote to starbucks asking if they could have their products shipped overseas
starbucks reply was
we dont support the war or anyone in it
i could see not supporting the war but please support the troops
otherwise what are we doing over there
FUK STARBUCKS

Starbucks are corporate whores who have crappy coffee. They purposely set up shop near small local coffee shops and drive them out of business. And of course the sheeple flock to the great Starbucks and bypass the indie coffee shop.
And Sonic Youth signing to their label? Rock’n'roll is officially dead now.
