Top 10 Worst Music Shows Of All Time

Over the years there have been many TV music shows – either on network television or on the music networks (which are all owned by mtv/viacom now aren’t they?) After contemplating them briefly here is my list of the top 10 worst of all time with a brief description of why they made my list:
10 – FARMCLUB
Sure there were some cool performances by some, at the time, unknown & up and coming bands. Somehow this show always had an infomercial feel to it though. And for good reason. It turns out that farmclub was created by Universal, and was more of a vehicle to promote universal artists than it was a true “competition”. This show bought it’s timeslot on USA networks at a low rate. Sounds like an infomercial no? Farmclub went down quickly when WWF Monday Night Raw moved to TNN so the audience that hung around to watch farmclub after the WWF was gone. Many bands became mired in contract problems & were swallowed up or dropped.
 9 – SOLID GOLD
You have to go a long way to beat the cheese factor of the countdown of the weekly top hits being portrayed and interpreted by a group of dancers in leotards. After all it was hosted by a slew of cheese-its such as Rick Dees, Dionne Warwick, Andy Gibb and Rex Smith.
8 – THE BODOG BATTLE
Do we really need a band competition done in a reality TV show format with stupid created drama and a long list of really cappy bands? Apparently we do. Speaking of infomercials . . . this one beats farmclub by a long shot. The bodog logo is always onscreen and the way owner/founder Calvin Ayre is portrayed wreaks of egomania. Let’s just dismiss this show as an infomercial and be done with it.
7 – TRL
Does this stand for “Total Retardedness Live”??? It should. No further comment necessary.
6 – MTV’s Video Music Awards
Why have awards when you don’t even show music videos anymore? This show used to be good – back in the day – but it is totally lame and irrelevant today.
5 – AMERICAN IDOL
The only reason this show isn’t #1 is because there are some knockoff’s that are worse.
4 – AMERICA’S GOT TALENT
No they don’t. Derivative crap formula show.
3 – PANTS OFF DANCE OFF
Fuse was ruined when it was bought & became run by the same demons that run MTV. ‘Nuff said. This show is a waste of time unless you enjoy watching horrible wanna-be strippers. Lame.
2 – DON’T FORGET THE LYRICS
This has got to be the most annoying show ever. Bad singers playing karaoke and not knowing lyrics to easy songs. Very repetative, weak, and you guessed it – lame. Even worse it is hosted by Wayne Brady. Yikes.
1 – THE NEXT GREAT AMERICAN BAND
This show is an insult to anyone that has actually played in a real band in real clubs trying to actually do real music. Of course we have the english accented judge, the latino female celeb of yester-year judge, and the ‘other guy’ judge formula - which in this case is the Goo Goo Dolls frontman afraid to really tell it like it is for the most part. Most of all though this crap made the top of my list for being totally unoriginal and because it is just loaded with terrible bands. This was the best of the entries? I doubt it. Take a closer look, if you can suffer through this show, and you’ll see the bands are more of a “let’s try to hit all the demographics” selection as opposed to actually good bands. Dare I say Star Seach, when they had a bands category, was better than this.
OMG…you can’t include Solid Gold on this list….Solid Gold…fillin’ up my life with music. In the early years, I loved this show!!!
Sure, in the end, and the countless change of lame hosts it got sucky, but it was a first of it’s kind. Don’t bust on Solid Gold, there are worse, like the entire line-up of crap on VH1.

Dude…I fxxking LOVED “Solid Gold” because it was so bad. That and “Dance Fever”. They got it wrong for all the right reasons.
The rest I totally agree with. “The Next Great American Band” is like that rock group category on “Star Search”…another rotten show I loved as a kid. The dance competition? Awesomely awful!

The only reason Coke Live’n'Local is not on the list is because it has local bands on it.

Of course TRL was and still is one of the worst music shows of all time. They have taken good bands and showed them to little kids whom don’t really know much about music. I used to watch it when I was young to hear of upcoming bands but MTV has become one of the worst stations ever. Also don’t get me started on that American Idol crap…….
You gotta add Rock School to that list, the one with Gene Simmons as a host. Even though the kids from that posh music school had talent(well maybe except for the vocalist, who still sort of had his charm and charisma), Gene Simmons is the biggest douche ever. Don’t get me wrong because I have respect for KISS, but man Gene should’ve kept his tongue in his mouth for this one.

Mtv as a channel should be #1. they don’t seem to have music videos on ever, it’s all reality tv or cribs. Mtv Get Off the Air!

Even though it was nowhere near as good as American Bandstand, Solid Gold shouldn’t be on this list. At least it had to do with music.
TRL was somewhat good in its first 2, maybe 3 years but has always sucked ass. If you want to add anything to the list, add anything on CMT.
I have to agree with you on this all those shows reek of corporate take over and commercialism. No talent and good looks will get you far.

I couldn’t agree more. Most of us are force-fed the media’s bullshit and grow to like it. That’s why all these bullshit shows get such high ratings. The absolute best music shows of all time are MTV2’s Headbanger’s Ball and any televised metal concerts.

Good list, but I wish you could switch around the order a little.
I’ve seen most of these shows and yes solid gold was a bit lame as well as Pants off dance off.
But at least you are bound to see a very hot girl on one of those shows do something sexy if you’re bored. I always get a pleasure out of seeing that.
Thing is, MTV still shows music vids, but it’s only done during a time when people are most likely sleeping. After that TRL is the only other program that’s gonna show music vids, but even those aren’t really worth watching. What ticks me off about MTV is that they they’re so cool, they can put their stuff on anything and have their own award shows. It’s like, dude, why can’t you stay where you fucking were!?! MTV is full of communist retards.
Finally, I wish you could have put Soul Train on here, which was that Hip-Hop show where all you see is people dancing to hip-hop beats. That shit pissed me off when I was a little kid.
MTV use to have cool shit on it back in the 80’s. They suck balls now. I’m glad I don’t watch much TV anymore. I forgot about solid gold. lol I hated that show.
Can’t say I agree with Solid Gold, I loved that shit when I was a little kid. Otherwise, awesome list, you nailed it with Farmclub, I forgot about that abomination. I’m surprised no one mentioned “Battle for Ozzfest”. As a Metalhead for 20+ years, I died a little inside with each episode. And yes Melo, Headbanger’s Ball is probably the best music oriented show on TV right now. They might be canceling it though.
I am so glad you didn’t list Friday night videos. I used to beg to stay up late to watch that. Yes, MTV sucks ass…now anyway. Most of the battle of the bands seem to be a money scam. Pay to play…whatever.
