Does Rob Zombie Lip Synch?

does-rob-zombie-lip-synch
December 18th, 2007 by Richiedude

Checkout the two clips below and you decide. One is obviously live - the other one - is that memorex?

Then remember that for TV performances dating back to The Ed Sullivan Show and beyond many artists have faked it, or if you prefer the term, lip-synched. At least for TV I don’t see the big deal. TV isn’t real. (Neither are ‘reality shows’ but that is another topic entirely!) Concerts are another story however. Do you want to see ‘artists’ pull the Milli Vanilli’? Is that what you want? What you really really want? Or do you want to really really see them really really perform?

We’ve been debating this topic for some time now. I think it’s fairly clear that in some cases he DOES have a backing track, though I’m not convinced he doesn’t also sing on top of it.

  2. richard gozinya  Says:

Yes, in the Letterman clip he is NOT singing live.
He is keeping his hands in front of his face so you can’t tell. Just listen to the vocals, they are obviously “studio quality”. If you have ever been to a Zombie show, he can never get through a verse without leaving out 10 words.
    Thank you.

  3. Derek  Says:

Who cares! Zombie has been lame ever sonce their La Sexorcisto album. He should stick to making rip-off horror movies…

  4. bornlucky  Says:

I say give the guy some credit! if he is on some shows heis singing with it,besides he’s a fucking tarantinoesque director now and Halloween was something else!who gives a fuck if he backs himself up on David fuckin letterman? if you go to a Zombie show theres no backup rob!!!!

  5. bornlucky  Says:

    i say no

  6. Anonymous  Says:

There is no lip syncing in either clip. Watch how he stops the lyrics when he flips his hair, that stop isn’t there on the CD.

  7. ESPimp  Says:

both performances are live you can hear some pitch mistakes and shit… check it out and analyze it

  8. LV  Says:

I have sang in bands my whole life and I can tell you without a doubt that neither performance is lip sync. Sometimes you just have an off day, as it looks like he had in that second clip. I have seen Zombie several times live and I can tell you some performances have been better than others. The one thing I notice about the letterman clip is that he is doing a very good job singing the song. But, it is not exactly like the album version. There are a few pauses and chopped words, if anything he was probably using a vocal processor, especially being on T.V. Most top live acts do, if you dont know about one, do a search on it. That is all. Thanks.

    im not convinced

  10. 6CRYPTIC6CURT  Says:

vid 1 sounds like at 3:18 the mic makes a noise! They prob play to a click track tho.

  11. Dan76  Says:

….alot of the artists that show up on letterman and the like are going through the motions. it’s got to do w/ the amount of equipment they would have to bring to the studio to get their sound. He’s NOT the only one.

As for the 2nd vid. Sounded live to me…if he sounds like that in the studio, he needs to hang it up. …as some have commented he may use backing trax for a part of the song, that’s not all that unusual for artists to do either….as a chorus/background vocal.

…most people can’t sing in the shower much less live…who cares!!!

I have seen zombie like 5 or six times, and ill tell you that rob does not lip sync. I saw the ozzfest show and that was like the 4th or fith song in their set list, when he was on letterman he was fresh, he wasn’t winded. when you are playng a show you get tired after a few hard hitting songs. trust me i have been in bands and on stage for 10 years. when i saw him at the maquerade in atl. his first three songs were flawless, and then he started missing words in the verses. All im saying is get up on stage and tell me after 4 or 5 songs your not winded, or get right on stage and play your first song. There is a huge difference in the quality.

  13. britto  Says:

Ive seen him live and he definately does not lip sync. If he misses some words who cares. People get tired after singing for awhile.. and as much as zombie jumps around on stage i would get tired too..one word shouldnt matter. He’s an amazing artist. Why would he dissapoint his fans like that.

  14. jeremy k.  Says:

ah, so he sucks live! anyway his last good album was hellbilly deluxe. he’s washed up and needs to retire. i must say though the new halloween was good though. leave live performances to bands who can sing!!! like Metallica!

  15. JB  Says:

whoever came up with this is…is just a bored little troll.
Yes he use too use a backing vox track, but who cares.

Spears Lip syncs, not Zombie, and if you watch these video and think so, WOW, youre just a oddball…

    JB

  16. AT  Says:

I think it’s quite obvious that neither are synched. After reading some of the other comments, I would have to agree that the second clip was just a bad example. And FYI, it’s actually rare to go on TV and not fake it. Pearl Jam was the first to not do so in one of their music videos, and not many have since followed that. It’s more common than you might think. But you never know.

  17. Christine  Says:

It’s obvious he isn’t faking it in the concert. I mean from the way he sounds its obvious, he gets breathless. The first one I think sometimes he’s singing because it sounds different than the recording but not many don’t have some type of recording. If he did its probably because at times in the song he’s supposed to sound distorted so he can’t sing but does when he can.

    Rob Zombie wouldn’t fake it.

  18. ~Z`  Says:

if you can’t cut it live you’re NOT a Musican

    .

  19. Scot  Says:

It’s obvious folks. Listen to the 1st one then listen to the second one. The first one is perfect, the second he sounds like shit.

  20. Joseph  Says:

I see no evidence of lip syncing. Simply because he can’t sing perfect in 100 degree weather doesn’t mean he was lip syncing in a air condition probably humidity controlled studio. Im not saying thats the reason Im just sayin it could’ve affected him a little. Also maybe being broad casted all over the world meant a little more to him than just another ozzfest.

  21. The Duke Western  Says:

I want to see them really really sing and play -

  22. The guy  Says:

Well Rob has become very commercial as of lately.

He really has got to stop spamming his wifes clothing line. I just find that annoying.

  23. Travis  Says:

Ahh, the old YouTube slightly off-sync transcode.

I’ve seen videos on YouTube where the sync themselves, while perfect on the source, is not so perfect once YouTube’s finished processing it.

Also, on the second clip, if it was taped and showed later on, it could be bad editing. I’ve seen OFFICIAL DVDs where the guys re-releasing the footage thought it would be a good idea to correct the mistakes. Only problem there is, the audio engineer didn’t know about it, and neither did the video guys either. The DVD in question, AC/DC Live At Donington. The VHS version isn’t dubbed at all.

  24. aaron  Says:

if you want to know so bad, why don’t you ask him?

  25. southernpsycho88  Says:

Yeah he probaley is lip synching on the David Letterman show but then they all do on shows like that.
    SNL,The Tonight Show,The Late Show,etc.
And we have known this shit for years!
Who gives a fuck I have seen Zombie live a few times and he does not lip synch in a live show and thats all that counts!

  26. THE DUDE  Says:

    HE DOES LIVE AS WELL
ANYTHING HE DID WITH WHITE ZOMBIE HE SINGS LIVE BECAUSEE THE TRACKS WERE ALL RECORDED ANALOG ON TAPE.
BUT MOST OF THE ROB ZOMBIE SONGS HE HAS BACKING GUITAR BASS DRUMS AND VOCALS.

I REMEBER BEING ON TOUR AS A TECH FOR THE OPENERS A FEW YEARS AGO AND DUIRNG THE FIRST DAY SOUNDCHECK
I HEARD HIM SING JUST CHORUS TO CHILDREN OF THE GRAVE AND RAN DOWN TO CHECK IT OUR AND BLASKO, TEMPESTA WERE THE ONLY TWO ON STAGE AND THERE WERE LEAD VOCALS AND RHYTHM GUITARS ALL ON TAPE.

IT REALLY SHOCKED ME. AND IT WAS FUNNY SEEING HOW POLISHED THE R.Z. STUFF WAS LIVE AND WHEN HE DID THE W.Z. STUFF HE’D LET THE CROWD SING AND THE SONGS WERE A LIL MORE RAW AND DIRTY.

  27. metalchick1985  Says:

You are lame if you think Rob is~
And he is a very talented writer/director.
get a life, Atleast he has one.

  28. THE DUDE  Says:

i love his music and his movies but what does being a talented writer and director have to do with if he lip syncs.

i was on the tour i saw it also when riggs would drink the blood from the clear guitar who was playing it?

honey don’t worry if you ar hot you’ll get backstage you do not have to defend the rockstars.
now go fix your smeared lip stick.

  29. Jim  Says:

I think on the Letterman show he does lipsync but live I don’t believe he does. Its on how his volume is and how he takes breath breaks as I call them during the songs. On the Letterman show, its more studio quality but on the live vid. its more realistic. I do believe that most of the acts on tv are fake or at least have a back track to sound more like the cd. I can vouch for that on my experience with seeing Bayside. Ant was messing up on some of his songs such as taking extended breathers and even forgot some of the words and when I saw him on tv it was like it was perfection. Well thats how our modern day media treats us.

  30. vinsanity  Says:

most pop artists lipsync esp. on TV, but also live. This is known.

Most metal, or in this case hard rock, don’t. This is also known.

I don’t even like the guy but to his credit, the 2nd is definitely live (why would you lip sync to a bad track? and when he talks it sounds identical), I dunno about the 1st one.

  31. Sheldon  Says:

I have seen Rob Zombie 2 times, on consecutive Ozzfests in 2002 and 2003, and he wasn’t lip syncing then. He missed words, and you could hear him trying to catch his breath. Now he did have tracked musical parts, the looped persussion parts, the synth parts, etc. But the rest was live.

  32. Jesse Omega  Says:

On the 1st video watch between 2:14 and 2:15. Proof that he is not lip synching.
Stop wasting time. Of course in a studio he’s going to have a cleaner perfomance. Especially when he knows he only hase to perform one song and there is no interaction with a crowd.

  33. Matt  Says:

i think it’s pretty clear that zombie is not synching during more then human. during american which i hate to say it but i think he might be, i daubt it though, zombie wouldn’t do that. but he is deffenitly using a backtrack during certain tracks on american which. which isn’t always a bad thing.

  34. Ian S.  Says:

Of course he lip synchs on Letterman, damn near every performance on those late night shows is.

And as for the comments on his music.

It’s my personal belief that Educated Horses is the best album he’s made since white zombie came to an end.

    Fuck radio hits.
