Gibson Won’t Give Musician The Prizes He Won
Wow. I know some companies can do sleazy things - but this one is VERY VERY LAME:
A musician named Tonedeff won the Lolapalooza Last Band Standing contest in 2006. Part of the prize package was “$10,000 worth of equipment from our friends at Gibson. (yes, believe it!).” Well, Tonedeff believed it, and he’s spent the last year and a half trying to get Gibson to make good on their promise. As Tonedeff notes on his blog, maybe he should have seen this coming when Don Pitts—Gibson’s Ambassador of Empty Promises (show above with devil eyes)—told him, “I mean, this is kind of weird, because you know, you DON’T play the guitar or drums.” - The Consumerist
The article goes on to talk about all the back and forth Gibson has done to this guy, and go over all the broken promises (he was supposed to win a photoshoot too - never happened). Read all about it here: http://consumerist.com/348960/gibson-screws-musician-out-of-10000-worth-of-equipment and at the guy’s own blog here: http://blog.qn5.com/2008/general/rant-gibson-hates-hip-hop .
Lame. Are their guitars even any good? Maybe thats the problem?
UPDATE!
Gibson finally ponied up and awarded the prize as promised:

Gibson aren’t just the worst big brand name in the history of music, they’re also the most scandalous. Who gives a crap if the dude doesn’t play? If you don’t give him the means to play anyway, he’s not gonna do it. Les Pauls and SG necks break extremely easily and are so cheaply made that their flamed tops (especially on the SG Supreme) actually flake off. Articles like this one only back up my theory. If Jackson had this contest and he won, he would have his equipment within a week.

Gibson’s Les Paul and SG are both made to break almost instantaneously. They’re scandalous, cheap, and idiotic. I would never buy from them.

That’s just wrong on all levels.
Sue the bastards!

This is what you get from the company that backs Guitar Hero. I never liked Gibsons. Over-priced crap is all they sell. Hell, even my guitarist (who has always backed Gibson) is now selling his Les Pauls. BC Rich has better guitars, and that includes the $99 Warlocks and Bichs.

Wow. I am also a rapper, but I play a little guitar and have a ton of influence from rock music, and this saddens me. when I started rapping we made our beats with a live drummer, a guitarist and a keyboardist. I guess Gibson has never heard of a group called The Roots? maybe the guy should take em to small claims court which maxes out at $5,000. only half, but at least it’s something!

After reading this, Gibson (not that it ever was on my top ten list of guitar makers) is totally forbidden in my eyes. To screw someone over like that is completely ridiculous. Unfortunately I’m going to have to go through all my gear to see which is from a branch of Gibson… I won’t even own a freaking cable manufactured by those jokes.
