I’ve always been a KISS fan, but this is a bit much even for me. I am one of those new musicians that don’t mind giving people a listen of my stuff for free. I just love doing what I do and I think I do a good job at it. And a lot of the bands I’ve seen lately, I think they do a great job as well. You’re always gonna have some that give it a half assed attempt but that doesn’t mean that the whole scene is ‘pathetic’. I guess some people just have to open their eyes a little bit more and look past just the major markets.

Good for him. Rock Music barely exists any more. The current “music INDUSTRY” revolves around sex, in all the wrong ways. The fucking Jonas Brothers are one of the biggest bands around right now… the mother fucking Jonas Brothers. Girls, little to not so little everywhere are the only ones still paying to see these new shit bands. I will happily pay to see Pearl Jam, U2, the Counting Crows, and a number of lesser known bands who make great music. I do think Gene was a bit misguided with all the talk of makeup and pyrotechnics and high heels… to me that isn’t what it’s about. But as far as current “rock” goes… it is well beyond pathetic. It is anemic, sickening, and if I think about it any more I will probably puke… so good day.

I’m not gonna lie, they’re are right… todays bands just play their music they don’t have much of a show to go behind it. I mean KISS are a bunch of dicks but they have a point. The only thing other thing that is different from then and now is that todays bands know how to play their instruments well enough that they don’t need to have a shitty stage show to sell albums. Though I’m adding metal into what they said if they only ment rock then they are right cause I fuckin hate emos

I have been a Kiss fan for 30 years of my 37 year life and this is an arrogant attitude that especially Gene Simmons has.
Gene should lighten up,what he is forgetting is rock and roll is about fun,his attitude is anything but fun and that is sad for one of the ultimate party rock bands of all time.Also,THERE ARE OTHER GOOD BANDS IN THE WORLD BESIDES KISS!!!Just because a band does not have an elaborate stage show does not mean they are no good,example:LED ZEPPELIN, BLACK SABBATH,METALLICA,NIRVANA,these bands went out and conquered the world with nothing but jeans and t-shirts and a no bullshit attitude.To defend Kiss however,I agree that when you pay $100 for a concert ticket you deserve a show.I also agree that when it comes to commercial

Ah, yes, the men that gave us such greats as “rock and roll all night” and “detroit rock city.” Here we have a band that truly pushed the envelope and moved their art forward with impressive musical composition; with lyrical genius.
Now, I’m not saying that rock is in great shape these days, but come on - KISS is the band to tell us? Like hell.

Rock is dead. But metal isn’t. I can name about 30 current metal bands that still give great shows and have complex songs off the top of my head. I mean just look at bands such as Amon Amarth, In This Moment, Children of Bodom, In Flames, Behemoth, and The Mars Volta. They don’t feel it necessary to do 1000 pyro bombs live, but they have a good fucking show with some music that is complicated as fuck. Sure, Amom may put on a bigass stage show featuring viking ships and Behemoth may spawn Black Metal makeup, but the music is what you go to a concert for. I could care less about some pyro bombs or someone spitting blood. I want to see some energy and some musicians adding a little something to their songs that wasn’t on the album.

I agree with alot of what these people here are saying. My question is though, what dicided to make KISS go after current bands like this?
Gene has a point of course, being that there are plenty of bands nowadays that produce crappy music, for instance, Howthorn Heights or Coheed and Cambria. (who would sound better if their frontman didn’t have a gayass voice and no offense to him) They just better not be reffering to my favorite band of Lacuna Coil since they are somewhat rock.

Why do they have to wear the make up? I mean, they could’ve played the same music without it.
Look at AC/DC, they had a singer die and still are as great as ever. Also, Aerosmith, they didn’t go out and go full on with make up, even though Steven has worn some on occasion, it’s not like KISS.

KISS is my first band on vynil I ever owned. I have been in bands all my life. And all I gotta say is, THESE LITTLE BOYS are comin and you can’t stop us. You and your man boobs are the greatest band in the world and it’s almost time to get out the walker. Thank god for Gene Simmons Family Jewels or else we would have forgot about you. And that show in the desert without Paul, pissed us off. Nice show, but the 4 hour wait off the blvd to the arena sucked ass!!! The costumes keep you popular, cause the simplistic music don’t compare to new bands who work their asses off to create it. What do you expect from elders?

The only reason that they are gripping about younger bands cause the spotlight isn’t on them anymore. When Gene said about young bands saying “Check out latest download album” Well at least they can say they have a new album for the fans unlike KISS who hasn’t a new album since what since the reunited in the late 90s! the real truth is when your band sucks blow some shit up and your cool. take off the makeup and leather pants you fag, pull your head out of your ass and wake the fuck up because if you were to put a band like us or many other unsigned bands on the same stage with you you would get your old ass put in it’s place. you want to talk about shit music these days with a song like beth in your arsenal thats your buisness but on a real stage in a country that matters you would get your asses handed to you in a second. you only had like 2 good songs anyway so go play them at the senior center and leave the stages for those that deserve them. you want to talk about energy the new bands have it and you don’t. i’ve been to kiss concerts and paul can’t sing for shit live and the whole band just stands there. the only movement you see is that stupid fucking tounge so just retire already. in 1978 you were cool but in 2008 your just another bunch of has beens taking up space. leave the room for the bands that belong there and go play the town fairs like the rest of the has beens and keep your mouth shut unless you like looking stupid.

remember in the 70S record companies chose disco over kiss. we are still trying to do something ourselves and if we make it it won’t be because we stole our moms makeup and shot off some sparklers. thats why gene is pissed. outside of that even if kiss went back to all original members their concert tickets are not worth 100$ we can go to ozfest and see lots of bands that beat kiss’s rehashed 70s shock rock for less and have a way better time just moshing in the mud. isn’t it time for them to have a vh1 where are they now special or something instead of playing shows and trashing bands on their way up. if he really doesn’t like the way things are going then he should open up his own studio and produce bands himself like ozzy has been doing for years. here’s my last valid point. with kiss it has never been about the music as they have passed over better musicians to get someone that fits in the costume. kiss has never cared about anyone other than kiss and for that us crappy bands say kiss our asses!

You know. I’m a fan of early Kiss. But, I have to say: “fuck them!” I’ve been to two Kiss shows (first one being the Psycho Circus Tour). They put on a damn good show. However, they are a couple of loud-mouthed, ignorant assholes. Just because the make-up, the costumes and the highheels worked for them doesn’t mean every band has to wear that crap. Hell. I just went to a show featuring Bury Your Dead. It was in a venue who’s capacity is only about 400 people (yes, 400, NOT 4,000), and I had more fun there than I did at either of the Kiss shows. If Kiss wants to even come close to comparing their current shows to a lot of today’s band’s shows, they are going to need to come up with some new stage tricks. The same old shit they do is getting to be just that: same old shit.

KISS is not a terrible band, they are just dated. They were the greatest. And also, since I have to pay over $35 for ticketmaster and all their stupid fees, then KISS still is the best performance on stage. But all the death metal and black metal bands need more credit than he gives them. This is just another of his great marketing ploys. In fact I would even say this was a planned interview to create controversy. Awesome marketing technique. But there is more to playing live than just the visual. I agree with all the comments that they are a great stage show, but all the music is dated. And I have seen KISS over 10 times. They are the greatest and until I can have my band give you $35 worth of show, then buying my cds is good enough. I do not have the means to give you that kinda stage show & I do not have the funds to support it. Gene is absolutely right. They may give you dated tunes, but the best stage show ever like Iron Maiden did on the Powerslave tour. Dimmu Borgir & Naglfar are my current favorites. But all your gonna get from them is music and face paint. KISS still out does everyones stage shows, and until someone get a fire breather or some Bukkaki Psunami then no one will be able to top them.
Lemme play devils advocate, who would want to copy them on stage when its already been done. Fuck that. Just ignore him and keep working at it. He has always been this way. Nothing new. I grew up in the 70’s so I remember the kind of rock n’ roll Gene and the guys are talking about. They are right in that there is a huge amount of apathy and tolerance of substandard music and showmanship nowadays. Rock n’ Roll is about being bigger than life and balls to the wall and we have sissy bands that stand there and half-ass throw out some rehashed jugga-jugga crap and the kids go wild. If they put on some eyeliner and look morose, the girls go wild. About time somebody said it.

And I just wanna say one more thing: Metal, like all music evolves. Kiss needs to realize that they mainly appeal to the older crowd these days. If a moshpit broke out at a Kiss concert they’d probably end the show. I’m sorry to all the Kiss fans out there, but, as far as the stage shows go, I can do most of that shit, easy. Blowing fire is not difficult. I’ve done it. Swinging above the crowd on a chain is pretty novice, too (ever swing on rope?). The floating drumset…Please! Both Tommy Lee, and Joey Jordison makes Kiss’ drumset trick look dumb. I would like to see Gene or Paul stage dive. The music isn’t that impressive anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll listen to Kiss or whatever if comes on the radio. But….Nevermind. They’re done.

Im not a KISS fan. They do have several songs any respectable metal fan loves. Ive seen them live and they were fantastic as hell. Im still not a fan. I dont think they can berate metal bands today as if they’re is the end-all rockband of the world, it’s haughty and superior to think that are no worthy rock bands right now other than themselves, either in the studio or in concert. Its this kind of self-centeredness that allows them to cash in on every little consumer driven materialistic item they can peddle to their die-hard fans. Somehow THAT is repsectable?

wait a minute…let me get this straight. In order to put on a “great” show(by Gene Simmons’ standards, that is)you have to wear platform shoes, spiked football shoulder pads, and more make-up than a 2 dollar whore??? Well I say THAT is what is wrong with music today! Music on the radio today sucks for a myriad of reasons, but we’ll keep this little rant focused on the point that Gene Simmons seems to be making. Live music is NOT about fireballs and and tarzan swings from chains, it’s about MUSIC! If your music sucks *cough* KISS *cough* then no amount of theatrics is going to make up for that. A truly incredible band is one that gets up on that stage and blows you away with nothing more than their musical talent and the crushing gravity of their presence. KISS has to resort to these big budget stage shows to detract from the fact that they haven’t actually done anything original in over 20 years. And to hate other up and coming bands for not being able to emulate KISS and their stage show is ridiculous. You think all that shit is free?! Somebody has to pay for all of that, and being a promoter myself, I happen to know that most bands don’t get that kind of money or support from their labels. See, what Gene neglected to mention is that KISS is NOT about the music, they are about whatever makes them money(hence the action figures, lunch boxes, condoms, and 2,000+ other items they’ve licensed the KISS name/logo out for over the years)It’s 35 years of slapping their name on junk toys and novelty items that pay for all that stuff. If Gene Simmons is really that concerned with bands doing shows like KISS does, maybe he should foot the bill and sponsor a band or two himself…

Gene doesn’t always pick the best way to say something, but I know what he’s getting at. First of all, I think he is probably a little out of touch with what current bands are out there. Regardless, he likes to champion KISS as the greatest live band ever. Honestly, he’s probably right. But, if you’re really good you don’t need to constantly tell people you’re good.
As far as the “manboobs” comment… Look, the guy is like 57 years old and has had two hip replacement surgeries. He has been going across the country displaying his artwork for the past year. If the man puts on 10 extra pounds, you have to understand that. He doesn’t look like he did 20 years ago, or even a few years ago. But, I would expect him to lose that extra weight soon.

Wholly!!! there are a lot of differing opinions on this but i think one overall thing that you can notice here is that no one has fully backed up Gene Simmons,we all have some different opinions here and come from different schools of rock,but it looks like one thing we can all agree upon is that Gene is an ass and he’s talking out of it.
Such a shame,you know,when i was a kid in the 70’s he seemed so cool,i guess sometimes people are not what they appear to be.This is a sad way to end kisstory.I would like to leave this and try to remember this band as the cool party rockers they once were.

A few things-
1) I respect Gene, but it seems the older he gets, the bigger the stick he has up his ass seems to get.
2) I’ve noticed a lot of people talking about Dime and other metal atrists saying that it’s the same way with metal. Now if you’re a true rocker or a true metalhead, you don’t think that the older stuff is the only good stuff out there.
3)Going along with the last one, unless you listen to only a lot of the medicore crap on the radio, there’s a TON of good rock and metal bands out there. I can list several amazing underground bands off the top of my head.
4)I also agree with Andy (No. 44), that if you listen, Gene’s basically saying that if you don’t wear a crapload of makeup, wear ridiculously high platforms, and have tons of antics and pyrotechnics at your show then your band must suck. If you listen carefully Gene doesn’t even once actually address the music ITSELF.

Okay a few things. First off, I respect Gene and all, but it seems that the older he gets, the bigger the bug stuck up his butt seems to get. Also, There are still a lot of good metal and rock bands out there. Unless you only listen to a lot of the mediocre crap on the radio, they’re fairly easy to find too. Plus, a true rocker or true metalhead doesn’t think that the old stuff is the only good stuff, OR that the new stuff is the only good stuff. A true rocker or metalhead can at least appreciate music both old and new. Now a lot of people are also bitching about myspace. Now I don’t know if a lot of you realize but most people I know use it to look up bands they already like or just started liking. Most people don’t just randomly browse myspace for bands.
The last point I wanted to make is pretty much what Andy (no. 44) said. Listen carefully and you’ll realize that Gene never actually adresses the music itself. If you listen closely, he basically says that if you don’t wear a ton of makeup, wear ridiculously high platforms, and have pyrotechnics and antics at your show, then you must suck.

I understand their opinions about mainstream rock, I do listen too classic and mainstream rock. I like all kinds of rosk music.
But I disagree about making diffrent sounds being “crap.” Yea i know the Jonas Bros and 30 Seconds to Mars suck and all, But some old bands do surport the mainstream bands.
Not letting do there own way is pretty much a bad thing.I know they want rock to more like what they remember back in the 60’s-80’s, but trying to get rid of the mainstream sounds is unfair cause most bands want to make there old style of music.

Some of 70’s bands like Kiss, Black Sabbath,Queen They did help rock to keep it alive as possible in the 70’s. And bands are trying to do that today. Not just the old bands, but also the maiinstream bands are trying to think of a new stlye of rock to keep the genre alive as possible.

for wayne or post no.22 who ever you are. you want to bash me for telling the truth thats fine but i will say this much. my band is out there every weekend doing shows for real fans that dig not only our music but the show we put on. we may only be local favorites at this point but we don’t berate other bands, and we try to support our community however possible. we do benefit shows to help out sick kids or people in need whenever our schedule permits. we are not making music to get rich or famous we do it because we love it, and we love to perform. kids now appreciate that we focus on the music more than the gimmicks (unlike kiss}
i never said kiss did not do great things over the course of their carrer but the white stipes have done great to, it doesn’t mean i want to listen to that shit. the only reason kiss ever did anything is because there really wasn’t much else back then. even then they were nothing you really wanted to hear. now they are living a stolen legacy and acting like they are the founding fathers or something and everyone should be like them. fuck that! hitler wanted everyone to be like him to, how did that work out again?

Look at Linkin Park,U2,Fallout Boy,Green Day and Staind. All of those bands work for the music releif and alot people and fans do thank them for something like Katrina.

Okay, two more things:
1- Going along with what 27stiches said- A couple weeks ago I went to a free concert where a bunch of local bands performed in a very intimate setting and it was one of the better concerts I’ve been to. Good luck getting into a KISS concert for free!!!
2- I thought of a great metal example that proves he doesn’t know jack about modern day rock and metal being dead. Look up the band The Haunted.

KISS blows. They may put on a show but the music is simpler than Mary Had a Little Lamb. Rock bands today either do what KISS does with simple songs and stage presence (defenitely not as extravagant) or focus on a lot of technical skills. If KISS has as much energy and as complex music as the Mars Volta then they can start talking shit. Otherwise they’re just a bunch of old guys wearing drag playing played out songs.

Gene really doesn’t know about metal these days. I could name tons of good metal bands,that play really complicated shit,I mean theirs a lot of underground bands that suck,and those you usually will waste your money on.Becuase the bands are usually emo and shit.But i think kiss is a little to old to be talking about that,I mean when they play,their riffs and solo’s are really not that hard,and bands these days play way better stuff.And i say this,becuase i can play a pritty mean guitar.Bands like opeth,lamb of god,dream theater,devil driver,and some modern rock bands like alice in chain,or three days grace,are good bands to see.And will defenitly make your money worth while,so f*** kiss.

I’ gotta leave another comment on this,i can’t believe this discussion is still going.If you read the last couple of things i wrote on here you can tell i have a pretty objective view on this.
Last night one of the reunion concerts was on tv.
and i gotta say it was fantastic!It rocked!!It made me think about this interview and this discussion, and how i have let Gene’s dumb bullshit ramblings ruin my enjoyment of this band.Yes Gene is an ass but who gives a shit what he says??We shouldn’t let this get to us so much.
As for all these people on here who hate kiss so much,i don’t think the kiss fans should really give a shit what you say either.You can’t compare Kiss to death metal bands,you can’t even put them in the same category,Kiss is a classic rock band,if you are a big Lamb of God Fan or a Dimmu Borgir fan you probably are not going to like Kiss unless you are open to other styles of music.It doesn’t make sense to put Kiss in the same category as these bands.Also Kiss may not be as intricate as Dream Theater,but that doesn’t mean they are not good musicians,Peter Criss is a solid Drummer.Ace Frehely a wicked guitarist.Paul Stanley a great guitarist and a phenomenal singer.
And finally our man of the hour Gene Simmons is a solid bass player and a good vocalist.Sure what they do may be basic,but that doesn’t mean it’s not good.Pretty pretentious attitude to think that music has to be intricate and technically perfect to be good,i have heard a lot of intricate bands that suck ass!!Soul should come first.If you don’t like kiss that is fine,you are entitled to your opinion,i just think that Genes bullshit has given all you kiss haters an excuse to slam them on line.There’s a lot of stuff out there worse than kiss,and there’s a lot of stuff i don’t like as well but i don’t go online slamming people just because i see an excuse to.Again we all agree here that Gene is being an ass,but that doesn’t mean kiss sucks.

ace and peter have been gone since the 80’s because they knew gene was an ass. their music was generic back then and still is now. if it wasn’t for Detroit rock city they would have faded even faster than they did. they are just a one hit wonder that took off because of a stage show and merchandising. it was a shocking look back then and horray it worked for them but music lovers demand more than looks now which leaves gene and paul out in the cold with what ever replacement players they have this week. ace and peter let kiss go a long time ago now it’s time for gene and paul to do the same. remember it’s better to burn out than fade away!

Yep! Gene is right on the money! KISS influenced so many bands over the years! Half of the bands you people have listed copy either Sabbath…Alice Cooper…KISS! Dimebag was a huge KISS fan. All Gene is saying is there are alot of bands out there that are lame which is very true. KISS is all about entertainmant people! KISS sells out everytime they play wherever they play! Music DOES NOT have to be complex to be good!!!! Bands like KISS…Motley Crue put show into their show!! KISS are Rockstars….thats what they wanted!!! Maybe others want to be guitar virtuosos…..In 20-30 years lets see how many of these new bands will have stood the test of time. The music industry is soo saturated with half assed bands its sad. I really dont think gene is referring to every band out there……KISS puts alot of time MONEY and effort into their shows to give fans a GREAT SHOW. Get off the age thing thats ridiculous……Ive been a KISS and music fan and musician for 25 years and have seen alot of bands and KISS still puts on the best show!!! lol…If Ace had been in charge of KISS they wouldnt have made past 3 years….I love Ace to death but thats the truth! For Kiss it diffently was not about the music, there music was not fantastic, the only reason why people cared about them was because of there live preformances, if they did not have all the make up and blood and tounges, Kiss would not have made a dent at all in the music world.

Seems to me that Kiss forgets about the 10 years or so of absolute garbage music put out by them. And the first time I ever saw them was on the Crazy Nights tour and Ted Nugent kicked their butts. He made Kiss look like amatures. And he had maybe less than a quarter of the stage and went out and killed it without bombs, fire etc. They redeemed themselves when they did their farewell reunion tour with Peter and Ace back in. But, this has always been Kiss act like you are the biggest and the best even if you aren’t until people believe you are.

Take for instance the band “The Number Twelve Looks like you” They’re music may not be the average persons style, but if you compare they’re musical talent — excluding the vocals– to kiss’s.. just to mention one more thing.. the only music that is even bringing in money these days is the metal, hardcore, screamo scene. It’s the only scene with fans that actually care enough about the music and the bands to go out and buy the albums.
