Interview With Justin McCoy Of Another Big Machine
A new band is coming at you full speed this year and the name is ANOTHER BIG MACHINE. They produce rock music, with pop vocals and each song brings to life an anthem like sound to them. The band, was formed in Louisiana and consist of Justin McCoy- vocals, D-White-guitar, Josh Lee-drums and Dane Carmouche-bass/vocals. Their self-titled debut album is crafted with songs that range from ardent love like SEDATED to a defiant stomp of DO ME LIKE THIS. So they have sassy playful songs and emotionally drawing songs and that is why the album merges genre and styles with such ease. The songs mean something and in reality that is what the listening public wants to hear and ANOTHER BIG MACHINE has got that all together.I got the chance to do a jumpstart interview with singer Justin McCoy through email to find out about the band, his vocal inspiration and the feelings and emotions that became of that disastrous storm in their home State.
AS A VOCALIST WHEN DID YOU START TAKING SINGING SERIOUSLY AND WHO WAS THE ONE PERSON WHO STOOD BEHIND AND PUSHED YOU TO MAKE THIS YOUR CAREER?
As long as I can remember I’ve taken singing seriously. My grandfather used to play old records in his home and I would always sing along to songs after hearing them a few times. He has always been there for me throughout my entire music career.
WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRTATION VOCALLY AND WHY?
Freddie Mercury of Queen…one of the greatest singers of all time.
YOU GUYS ARE FROM LOUISIANA AND PRETTY MUCH SAW THE DISASTERING STORM..PERSONALLY CAN YOU PUT INTO WORDS YOUR MEMORY OF THAT DAY AND WHEN ALL WAS SAID AND DONE WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHANGE THAT HAPPENED TO THE BAND FROM THAT DAY ON?
I can’t put into words what happened on that day. It’s a big blur in my mind. I just remember listening to the radio and people were calling in for help. They were trapped in their attics and their homes were flooding. It was chaos. As a band, we all realized how fragile life can be and we remembered the reason we were all playing music together. From that day on we took ourselves and our band more serious.
IS THE BAND DOING ANYTHING MUSICIALLY TO HELP THE REBUILDING OR JUST THE COMMUNITY IN GENERAL?
We recorded in New Orleans after the storm and we tracked a song called “Our Time.†The song is about the people of New Orleans coming together and rebuilding their city. We pushed the song as an anthem for the people of the city.
FROM YOUR DEBUT ALBUM IS THERE ANY SONGS THAT HIT UPON THE INCIDENT AND HOW HARD IS IT GETTING SOMETHING LIKE THAT TO PAPER?
Not on this record.
YOU SHOWCASED IN LOS ANGELES, A BIT OF A CULTURE SHOCK FROM WHERE YOU ARE FROM. HOW DOES YOUR BAND AS A WHOLE ADAPT TO CULTURE CHANGES AND DO YOU FEEL AS A TOURING BAND THAT FLEXING TO PERSONALITY/CULTURE CHANGES IS HIGH ON THE PRIORITY LIST FOR A BAND ON THE ROAD?
Not really. We are always ourselves where ever we go. I think we have a harder time adapting to the weather in the different cities we go to rather than the culture or the people. That being said, I may think differently about places like Europe or Japan.
AS A LOCAL BAND YOU STARTED OUT WITH COVER SONGS. HOW EASY WAS IT TO MERGE INTO ORIGINIALS AND WAS IT EASY FOR THE LOCALS TO GET INTO IT WHEN YOU STARTED PLAYING OUT WITH THESE SONGS AND HOW DO THEY ACCEPT YOUR SUCCESS THUS FAR?
Our hometown fans are the greatest. When we first started playing our own music, everyone loved it. It was like a breath of fresh air swept through the town. Our fans are the same people today as they were two years ago. They still come to all the shows and support us until end.
IF YOU COULD SUM UP THE DEBUT ALBUM HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR BANDS SOUNDS VS ALL THE OTHER ROCK BANDS OUT THERE?
The record is a rock record, really soulful and true. I think it relates to a lot of people in at least one way. The thing is, anybody can listen to this record, it’s so versatile teenagers to grandparents can enjoy it.
2007 BROUGHT A LOT OF HARDWORK WITH WRITING AND RECORDING THE ALBUM WHAT DO YOU HOPE FOR IN 2008?
I hope that our record does well and we get to play a lot of shows and meet all kinds of new people.
TOURING PLANS?
A radio tour has been set for March 31st thru April 11th. Check out our myspace page for all future tour dates: www.myspace.com/anotherbigmachine
ONE SONG OFF THE DEBUT DISC YOU THINK FANS/CRITICS NEED TO GET THEIR EARS ON?
The opening track “Sedated†is one that I think people will relate to it in many ways.
WHEN IS THE SINGLE FOR BRAND NEW KIND OF LOVE GETTING RELEASED? ANY IDEAS OF A VIDEO YET?
It hits the airwaves on March 24th. A video has been talked about but we are still in the early stages of gearing up for the release of the record. Once the video is shot, it will be put on our myspace page as well.
