Interview With Chiodos Guitarist Jason Hale

CHIODOS brought out an album that captured the ears of their listeners in 2007 by releasing their BONE PALACE BALLET. They are a hardcore band that really doesn’t care and are a bunch of fun loving guys. I got a chance to talk with Jason, a guitarist from CHIODOS, on April 30, 2008 at the Palladium.
HAVE YOU COME UP WITH STUFF FOR A NEW ALBUM?
Not yet.
IS THERE A REASON WHY?
No, just haven’t gotten around to it. To lazy.
IF YOU WERE TO CREATE A NEW ALBUM, WHAT WOULD YOUR MAIN FOCUS BE?
To make it good, I don’t know.
NO STORY LINE OR ANYTHING?
No, no concepts on it.
WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR AUDIENCE TO GET OUT OF YOUR MUSIC THE MOST?
Good times.
WHAT ABOUT YOUR MUSIC, NOT JUST YOUR LIVE SET?
I don’t know, just fun.
DO YOU SEE MORE AND MORE KIDS COMING OUT TO YOUR SHOWS AND ENJOYING YOUR MUSIC?
Yeah, it’s been a steady progression.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE TOURING WITH LINKIN PARK?
It was kinda weird.
WHY?
The crowd was just weird. They weren’t expecting something like us. I mean the crowd was weird, but it was a fun tour to do over all.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE GUYS IN LINKIN PARK?
They seem nice, I really only met each of them for like 5 minutes each.
DO YOU GUYS ALWAYS AGREE ON THE MUSIC WHEN YOU START WRITING?
No, not at all. We always butt heads and always concerned about writing the best thing possible.
SO, HOW DO YOU AGREE ON WHAT TO PUT IN YOUR MUSIC?
Usually what everyone else thinks, like a majority vote.
WHAT ABOUT LYRIC WISE?
That’s all on Craig.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING IN THE STUDIO WITH CASEY BATES?
It was fun. Yeah it was pretty interesting.
DID YOU WORK YOU GUYS HARD?
Not really. Well, we had a dead line for writing songs, so he made us write a lot, but for the recording process he was a pretty cool guy.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU HAVE LEARNED FROM BEING IN A BAND AND TOURING?
How to not to drunk.
HAVE YOU LEARNED ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR MUSIC AND YOUR SELF WHILE BEING ON TOUR?
There’s a lot, I cant just name one thing.
WHERE DO YOUR SONG TITLES COME FROM, CUS THEY’RE A LITTLE ODD?
They’re just inside jokes, or stuff people say.
CAN YOU GIVE AN EXAMPLE?
Like our ANR guy who signed us to Equal Vision, he was watching wrestling and the Undertaker came out. And he said, “Oh man, The Undertaker’s thirst for revenge is unquenchable.” And then our guitar tech was really stoned and said, “I didn’t say I was powerful, I said I was a wizard.”
NOW I KNOW YOU GUYS DO A LOT OF CRAZY STUNTS WHILE PERFORMING.
Not really, we don’t do back flips or anything.
WELL CRAIG JUMPS OUT INTO THE CROWD. HAVE ANY OF YOU GOTTEN HURT?
Well that’s easy and no one gets hurt.

No, nothing to crazy.

Umm… a Hybrid, maybe a Prius.
WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
Probably Chicago or New York, somewhere where you don’t need a car.
IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY SUPER POWER, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE?
I would want to fly. Cus its awesome and I can fly anywhere in the world.
IF YOU HAD 24 HOURS TO LIVE, WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH YOUR TIME?
I don’t know, fuck anything that moved.
IF YOU COULD SPEND YOUR TIME WITH ANY ONE PERSON, WHO WOULD IT BE?
My girlfriend.
IS THERE ANYTHING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOUR MUSIC?
Its awesome.
