Emo And Goth Music Be To Banned In Russia
July 24th, 2008 by MrsBarnesAccording to The Moscow Times the Russian government is in the process of drafting a law to make emo and goth music illegal.
Last month a parliamentary committee was convened to discuss a draft proposal of the Russian government’s “Government Strategy In The Sphere Of Spiritual And Ethical Education” bill, the details of which were leaked to The Moscow Times. Among other measures, the proposed legislation calls for heavy regulation of emo web sites and for banning young people dressed like emos from entering schools and government buildings.
The bill also outlines what it calls a “spiritual and ethical crisis” facing Russian youth, including the high rate of alcohol abuse, teen abortions and “negative youth movements.”
Emo ideology encourages and justifies drug use and sexual relations among minors, according to the bill, which also lumps emos and goths together with skinheads.
“The point of the bill is so that by 2020, Moscow will have someone to rule its government,” said Alexander Grishunin, an adviser to Public Chamber member Yevgeny Yuryev, one of the bill’s three coordinators. “This is the first step in the public discourse.”
The bill’s sponsors hope that it will be passed into law by the end of the year.

What is the difference between emo, metal and rock? If emo music is setting a bad example for kids then rock music has been doing it for a long time same with metal. If they ban emo and goth music they will have to ban rock, metal, and rap, they all talk about sex and drugs, then what ban the rolling stones from preforming in russia? I just think that banning one type of music because it talks about issues that are in almost every style of music is real stupid.

To those saying “ban emo, listen to metal”. You’re forgetting that metal could also be construed by such conservative government types as gothic/emo music, since a lot of goths/emos also listen to metal.
So yeah. It’s still shit, and a move towards totalitarianism, much like what happened in the USA in the 70’s. But whereas in America such a bill was never passed (to my knowledge), I have less confidence in the Russians successfully opposing this legislation.

It may just stir up more controversy, and in turn, make those scenes stronger than ever. But I don’t live in Russia so I don’t know to what extent their laws are actually implemented. If the Kaiser and Stalin are any indication, I wouldn’t fuck with them.
Emo and goth should be trampled upon anyway. They are the most effeminate of all music scenes and it will be healthy for them to face combat.
More interestingly, Russia has a thriving extreme radical black metal scene. Apparently it has not roused the attention of the authorities yet.

I’ve been reading a lot of comments, and one thing I’ve noticed is a lot of people don’t get what type of people don’t get what type of people are trying to pass the bill here.
Big wig politicians can’t tell death metal from screamo. Like D-Muerte talking about the thriving black metal scene. It would be BEYOND easy for these types of people to misconstrue black metal as gothic music, and so on. So even though they SAY emo and goth, the whole spectrum of what they’re banning is actually QUITE vauge.

I think this article is quite amusing in the very least bit of what it comes to make of it. The whole “Emo” revolution has swept the world not to forget the United States in which pop rock has become labeled as “Emo” music. The origins of this style of music has came about in the mid 80’s and early 90’s in Washington, DC as an offshoot of Hardcore. It slowly started getting more melodic and less chaotic as the style called Emocore slowly drifted away and didn’t make a comeback until the late 90’s and still treads in the sea of music that is current of today’s trends. The whole basis of “Emo” soon gave way to its new sound style in the late 90’s and in today’s pop music trend as kids started showing more emotion in their lifestyle and felt that they should turn their depression and oppressed feelings into a lifestyle. It has become apparent that Russia feels that this is unethical and not very spiritual which I believe is not really against anyone unless they are very opinionated against how the world’s trends go and how kids and heck even adults want to show their feelings to the public eye. “Emo” kids as some are refered to only want to write their sad and depressing poetry and wear dark eyeliner, lipstick, and black clothing to show that their against the world and want to hang around the dark corners of their rooms. Now in the article, it does mention of alchohol abuse, abortions, and negative youth movements, in which I think this is blasphemous. I mean I am talking in an American eye but that doesn’t really have to be connected to a lifestyle of that nature. I mean their is so many different trends that so called affect people to do this sort of thing but in a sense I believe they connect it with the way most lyrics go in “Emo” music. They also mention a connection to skinheads which is a totally different trend in itself and I would love to write an article on them but I’ll say that for another day. Well as this does seem amusing I does seem pretty serious and thats how they want to run their country, its their choice. It just gives me more relief that I have more freedom as an American. Ohh before I do finish this off, I would like to mention something that may have a bit more understanding of why Russia may have done this. In the past spring/winter, I also came across an article found in a magazine that I regularly subscribe to that talked about the “Emo” revolution going on in Mexico. As it said, there has been riots and protests being held in Mexico due to the intolerance of “Emo” kids getting bashed for their opinons and viewpoints. Very interesting non the least but its does raise some eyebrows to the public.

I have to say, it made me chuckle to myself to hear of this. Emo is terrible, as is a great deal of goth. But if Russia is really putting effort in to being a democracy (and I highly doubt they are as of late) this is totally against everything that a democracy is supposed to be about. I fact, all of Russia’s actions are pointing towards a resurection of the Soviet Union, at least in my mind. Give it ten years, I bet you anything it happens. You’ll see. After all, it’s the birthplace of modern Communism, what else would you expect? The Soviet ideology is simply too deeply rooted in Russia’s blood to just disappear permanently.

I never cared for emo music and actually I don’t hate any genre as long as it’s not being showed down people’s throat by the media, like the faggish, lipsinking pop bullshit boy/girl bands.
Most people I know hate emo, but banning it will make it “cool” again because that will trigger more demand for it in the underground circuit.
If they even have the balls to ban metal, I hope the people will revold and topple those ignorant shitheads. Now THAT, would be fucking METAL !!!

Banning music is bad news. If they ban emo and goth music what is stopping them from banning Metal next or any other types of music that are considered a “negative movement” I love how they are blaming music for all the problems they are having with teen’s over there. Its really too bad.
