Funeral For A Friend | ‘Memory And Humanity’ CD Review
December 22nd, 2008 by Stephanie StevensThe build up and explosion of the introduction of FUNERAL FOR A FRIENDS fourth album MEMORY AND HUMANITY defiantly gives you the edgy feel you fell in love with in the beginning when this band first started out. The song that brings this to you is a song called RULES & GAMES. I really think it was a great way to start the album off and it gives you enough energy and excitement to want to know is coming up.
I’ve been a fan of this band since FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND’s humble beginnings and had the pleasure of interviewing then when they came to tour the States for the very first time. So as the music came with every new album I watched the change, the evolution, the searching this band was doing to get to a state of natural beauty. Fans of CASUALLY DRESSED AND DEEP IN CONVERSATION might have been scratching their heads the last few years because with every album the band has gotten less aggressive, but have they?
To be honest the sense of aggression is still their but not as in your face. Just take a song like CONSTANT ILLUMINATIONS. It’s a driving song, it still has that in your face ability but they do it in a more creative and naturally pleasing way instead of just being “on” at all times. BUILDING is the most precious song on the album. Vocally it’s beautifully arranged and shows the talent this band has in an acoustic way. MAYBE I AM? Has some great lyrics that stick with you. GHOSTS, KICKING AND SCREAMING and YOU CAN’T SEE THE FOREST FOR THE WOLVES is probably my top 3 songs of the disc. On this album there is a load of intelligent making melodies, energy and lyrics that make you feel the honesty and passion this band has come to give us time and time again.. I think the boys have created the most cohesive and satisfying album to date.
