Vocalist Crispin Earl Of The Veer Union Chats With Stephanie Stevens
February 23rd, 2009 by Stephanie Stevens
THE VEER UNION has the future on their mind as they begin to make a spark on the U.S. rock market. With their single SEASONS heating up the charts you will know this Canadian band all too well by the start of summer.
I did a quick one on one with Crispin Earl vocalist and found out some quick tidbits about the life that is THE VEER UNION
IN YOUR BIO IT WAS SAID THAT TWO OF YOU LIVED OUT OF YOUR REHEARSAL SPACES. HOW DID A PAST LIVING ENVIROMENT HELP IN THE INSPIRATION FOR WRITING MUSIC AND GETTING TO THE POINT OF FORMING THE VEER UNION?
Every person has been through experiences in his/her life which makes them who they are today. The lifestyle which we were leading at the time would be unimaginable to most, for example: we lived in an abandoned movie theater which doubled as our rehearsal space. The space in total was 250 square feet with no windows. We would shower out of a sink in a bathroom that was pretty much unbearable to all senses, so that being said, it’s all about perspective. We were making enough money off of live shows and CD sales to stay alive as professional musicians, so in our eyes we were living the dream. This would be a breaking point for most, but to us, our view was- there is no place to go but up. We have the same outlook lyrically and musically as we do in life. This record is the soundtrack to our lives.
THROUGH THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND YOU HAVE MULTI INSTRUMENTAL GUYS AND YOU ALSO HAVE HAD SONGWRITING CREDITS TO OTHER ARTISTS ALBUMS. WHEN LOOKING FOR MEMBERS TO ROUND OUT THE VEER UNION WAS THAT SOMETHING YOU WANTED MEMBERS TO HAVE STRONG BACKGROUNDS IN DIFFERENT AVENUES OF THE MUSIC WORLD?
We weren’t really interested in their backgrounds as far as their accomplishments; we just wanted to play in a band with our bro’s. When going on the road, the strength of a bands friendship will make or break the band.
YOUR ALBUM- AGAINST THE GRAIN- IS COMING OUT SOON IF YOU COULD DECRIBE THE OVERALL VIBE OF THE RECORD FIRST FROM JUST A STANDPOINT OF A MUSIC FAN AND THEN THE STANDPOINT OF A PROFESSIONAL IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY HOW WOULD YOU REFLECT ON THE ALBUM IN BOTH LIGHTS?
From both stand points this is a record from front to back that is emotional charged with real life passion and will take you in many different directions.
SEASONS- THE BANDS SINGLE IS A GREAT CATCHY SONG, PUTTING OUT A SINGLE FOR A NEW BAND. HOW MUCH PRESSURE IS THAT TO MAKE SURE IT’S THE RIGHT SONG TO GET YOUR NAME OUT THERE? AND WHAT MAKES SEASONS THAT SONG FOR YOU GUYS?
Being a new band there is always a significant amount of pressure in putting out your first single. As a band we felt that our first single “Seasons” was the best representation of The Veer Union.
UNIVERAL/MOTOWN IS A UNIQUE LABEL ALIGNMENT. DO YOU FEEL YOUR ALBUM MIGHT BE MIS-MARKETED OR DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE BETTER CHANCES AT GREAT THINGS?
One of the reasons we signed with Universal/Motown was because the label wanted to back our band the way we wanted to represent ourselves, so based on this, we feel that we won’t be mis-marketed. It was important to us that the label was signing us based on how we wanted to market ourselves… and not themselves.
WHAT IS THE TOURING PLANS FOR YOU GUYS THROUGHOUT 2009?
We plan on touring throughout 2009-2010 and will be starting a tour in mid-April with Hinder, Theory of a Deadman and Black Stone Cherry in correlation with our record drop on April 21st!
