Does Nine Inch Nails Sound Like Genesis?
June 8th, 2009 by MrsBarnesCall me crazy – but I heard the NIN song ‘Down In It’ the other day and for some reason I started to hear a similarity to the Genesis tune ‘That’s All’.
Compare the main keyboard riff in Genesis’ ‘That’s All’ to the wierd keyboard riff in NIN ‘Down In It’ that first comes in at the 19 second mark, repeats off and on throughout the song and is the main closing theme.
Wierd huh? Or am I nuts? Your thoughts?

Good ear on that Key part. I was growing up when both songs came out… and I never caught it. But that is just one part out of many in that some. I am sure that Trent being the way he is, was giving a musical nod toward Phil Collins.
I duno, but at least it sounded great in my head!
Well there’s a similar melodic arc in there but the harmonic context is completely different. Also the syncopation in each is clearly independant of the other.
Further Down in It is more a direct rip of Dig It by skinny puppy (trent admits this in interviews).
And finally- Trent Reznor has lost hit wheras genesis is still fantastic.
I’m going to go listen to Lamb now.
