I don’t even know what to say about this CD. When I got it in my mailbox I was super excited cause ROB ZOMBIE is the shit with his booty shaking music and just cool look and well he did remakes of Halloween and I loved it. Well this CD just totally disappointed me. It does have that same ZOMBIE sound and flair but the songs are just really cheesy and not that much appeal.
I felt each song didn’t have a distinct sound and well not one song stood out to say yes this is going to outdo his older shit like DRAGULA or LIVING DEAD GIRL. If you’re a hardcore ZOMBIE fanatic then you will probably dig it and call me a fool or worse for not sharing your thoughts but it took all my power not to shut it off after the 4th or 5th song.

I could’nt agree more. It’s sad, I am a huge Rob/White Zombie fan and all I hear when listening to the new album is a poor production and, even more sad to say, bad songs. Some riffs are cool, but the singing is off, the drums sounds muffled and I suppose they wanted a “vintage” drum sound ala’ 70’s, but it just sounds bad.
And did John 5 get all his guitar ideas in this album? ‘Cause every guitar melody sounds like Mansons Mechanical Animals.
And I must just stress, I love everything else by Zombie, and thought that “What” sounded cool and promised something new and cool.
But right down to it, I agree with Stephanie.
I wasn’t actually expecting much, at all. haven’t listened to rob zombie for quite some time. guess his lousy halloween movies got me thinking twice. so, the new release didn’t make me loose my mind. BUT, surprisingly, when I turned it on I ended up listening to every track, some twice. I really got my excitement back! catchy tunes, with good riffs, nice lyrics, and a spooky horror-feeling throughout the whole album. I would definitely advice people to check it out. not necessarily saying that I’ve out-smarted the reviewer and mr/ms ’supercharger’ by seeing beyond them, but people outta know that i loved it!
Yea I was pretty much sad and I know I am either going to use it as a dust collector…..but I do have my old zombie stuff which pumps me up at the gym LOL
I have to disagree completely. I believe the album carries more than it’s own weight in heavy and catch riffs (Werewolf, Baby), Black Sabbath style stomps (Jesus Frankenstein) and just dark cool monster, slasher vibe (Man Who Laughs). If anything, the band warrants and improvement in the technicality of songs structures. They bring a throwback feel of some early White Zombie (What?) and later White Zombie.
Personally, a very good album worth of a couple listens before tough judgement.
At first i was extremely let down by this album but…. Give it a few more listens. It really grows on you!! and know i really find just about as strong as any of his solo albums. Werewolf Baby is my jam!!! that song smokes!!
It’s hard to give that criticism, I do, or more like, did love Zombies work.
But when people like “Jerry” says stuff like “If anything, the band warrants and improvement in the technicality of songs structures”, I can’t really belive what he’s saying. If a song is more technical or advance does not mean it is better, specialy when it is badly recorded. Even thou it is meant to sound like that, it goes away from the Zombie that I know. I don’t really wanna go in on musical specifics, because there is no end to arguments and so on.
I have listend to Hellbilly 2 so many times now. It does not get better, and even my friends who are in to Zombie cant relate to this new Zombie-sound.
It sounds like Zombie have fell in this Psychobilly/rockabilly fad that is so popular these days. Now even these peice of crap band is gonna open for him like, Necromantix.
So why is Zombie regressing? He has created masterpieces. There is no need for Zombie to get more “garage” or “psychobilly”. He can be raw and hardhittin’, but instead it sounds fatigued and to be honest, a regress to a style he is far superior than.
I must stress. I hate giving him bad criticism. He made my 90’s and he is one of the few artist I have respected through all these years. But again, I almost think this is sad.
i think rob zombie is giving up abit because i loved his old music especially NEVER GONNA STOP and FEEL SO NUMB off the album the sinister urge but educated horses and hellbilly deluxe 2 is shit
